Is Matt Walsh Catholic?

by | Oct 12, 2023 | Catholic | 0 comments

You might have seen him in “Dancing with the Stars”, Matt Walsh is quite a popular figure today. But what really makes him famous is his statements and stance on tough subjects, which he boldly shares through his YouTube channel and show on The Daily Wire. He also often speaks about faith and culture, which can make one wonder what his religion is and how it affects his ideologies.

Matt Walsh is a practicing Catholic. Meaning, that he incorporates the Catholic faith into all his decisions and day-to-day activities. Born into a conservative Catholic family, he has always had a strong sense and biblical standards of how Catholics, religion, and certain things in the community should be.

This strong stance on faith, politics, gender identity, and social issues is exactly why Walsh is often in hot water. But what exactly did he say and do that made him such a controversial figure today? Continue reading to find out.

What is Matt Walsh’s Religion and How Did it Shape His Political Ideology?

Matt Walsh is a devoted Christian and a practicing Catholic. In one of his interviews, he says he grew up “very Catholic” in a “very conservative Catholic” family with 5 brothers and sisters where one of her sisters is a nun. He also said that it was his parents who instilled in him the ability to defend and live his faith. Now, this laid the foundations for how he sees everything in life. So even if he grew up in liberal places and liberal schools, he stuck to what he was taught and his faith.

Walsh is known for his strong religious beliefs, which heavily influence his political ideologies and views on current issues. Much of what he believes in conforms to conservative Catholic teachings. While this often puts him in controversies, he doesn’t mind and continues to speak about them through different channels, such as books, YouTube, events, and his show on The Daily Wire.

To give you an idea of some of Matt Walsh’s ideologies and stances, here are some of the social issues that he spoke about:

Family and Gender Roles

Walsh follows traditional family standards, believing that a child or children should be raised by a man and a woman. For him, a man – a husband – should also be the one going out and working, even saying in one of his videos that being a stay-at-home husband is a non-surgical strategy to become a eunuch.

That said, Walsh believes in traditional biblical standards for men and women. Aside from believing that the father is the head of the family, he also insists on young people marrying and starting a family.

Abortion

Like the Catholic Church, Matt Walsh is pro-life, seeing abortion as murder. In one of his speeches, he spoke against the pro-abortion movement in dehumanizing an unborn child. He argues that it is a “scientific fact that the being in the womb is indeed a living being and a member of the human species.” Adding that if an unborn child “isn’t human, then what species is it?”

Transgender

Here’s an issue that has really put Matt Walsh on everyone’s radar. His documentary, “What Is a Woman?”, has more than 189 million of views on Twitter alone and an audience score of 86% on Rotten Tomatoes. It went viral with thousands of memes made out of it, getting posted and reposted among conservatives. On the other side, however, it got him a lot of hostility from transgender activists.

In case you haven’t heard of it, “What Is a Woman?” is a documentary where Matt Walsh goes around asking what it means to be a woman, relating it to the transgender rights movement. In it, you’ll find “gotcha” moments where those who tried to define a woman faltered, giving out flimsy answers. It also includes repeated attacks on transgenders with Walsh calling them part of an “insane ideological cult” at one point.

That said, Walsh is anti-LGBTQ. He was even crowned Transphobe of the Year in 2022 by The New Republic. He is vocal in speaking about gender identity and is firm in his belief that gender-affirming is equal to mutilating children.

Who is Matt Walsh?

By boldly tackling tough subjects and controversial issues in society, Matt Walsh has created a name for himself as one of the Right’s most influential figures. He is a speaker, podcaster, and host of “The Daily Wire’s Matt Walsh Show”, often touching on subjects about religion, culture, and politics. He is also a YouTube content creator with 2.75 million subscribers.

In addition, Walsh is an author with 4 books under his name. He wrote the “Church of Cowards: A Wake-Up Call to Complacent Christians” where he challenges people who claim themselves as believers but whose convictions and lifestyles are not Christian-like. He also has a book version of “What Is a Woman?” and another book against liberals entitled “The Unholy Trinity: Blocking the Left’s Assult on Life, Marriage, and Gender”. Lastly, he is a children’s book author with his work: “Johnny the Walrus”.

As you can imagine, Walsh is often criticized for his views, but he continues to share them nonetheless. Some of those who criticize him are even Christians who say that he is spreading hate rather than love and the religious faith.

In 2021, for instance, he was tapped to speak at a student-organized event at St. Louis University, Missouri, but was later denied by the school. The organizers then looked for another venue and found the St. Francis Xavier College Church, which was a church affiliated with St. Louis University. But the parish priest also refused for the church to be utilized for Walsh’s speech, saying in an email that his statements and contents regarding “immigration, communities of color, Muslims, and other important topics is not in keeping with who we are as a parish and as part of the Catholic Church.”

More recently, Walsh found himself in another similar incident when the University of San Diego, a private Catholic university, blocked him from giving a lecture. The university states that: “Walsh’s beliefs are “grossly offensive” and would create an “unsafe” environment on campus for different populations of people.”
